Lossy vs Lossless Image Compression Explained

Understand what image compression removes, what it preserves, and how to avoid needless quality loss.

Two different goals

Lossless compression stores the same decoded image information more efficiently, while lossy compression discards selected information to achieve smaller files. PNG is a familiar lossless format. JPG is a familiar lossy format. Containers such as HEIF, WEBP, and TIFF can support different compression approaches.

When smaller is better

Smaller files upload faster, use less bandwidth, and are easier to attach to messages. A compressed copy is often ideal for routine sharing. The point of diminishing returns arrives when text becomes fuzzy, gradients show bands, or photo details develop halos and blocks.

Protect your master file

Treat the original as a master and make purpose-specific copies from it. Avoid opening a JPG and repeatedly saving it as another JPG. For critical work, compare at the intended display size and preserve a lossless or original-quality version alongside the delivery file.
