HEIC vs JPG: Quality, File Size, and Compatibility

Compare HEIC and JPG before choosing the right format for sharing, storage, or editing.

The central tradeoff

HEIC is designed for efficient storage and can hold more than a simple flattened picture. JPG is older and less feature-rich, but its universal compatibility remains a major advantage. The best choice depends less on which format is newest and more on where the image must work.

Quality and file size

Both formats can use lossy compression, so visual quality depends on encoder settings and on how many times an image has been saved. HEIC commonly achieves a smaller file at a similar visual quality. Converting to JPG does not restore detail that was absent in the source, and repeated JPG exports can introduce visible artifacts.

A sensible workflow

Keep HEIC originals for your photo library, then export JPG copies when recipients or upload forms require them. For a portfolio or important print, inspect the converted file at full size before deleting anything. Use a moderate JPG quality setting rather than chasing the smallest possible file.
